The structure which houses Travelers Rest dates back to the late 1880s when it was a popular stop along the stagecoach route to New York City. In 1961, with only $300 to his name, Gerhardt Langner purchased the property to open his own restaurant. Over the years Mr. Langner toiled building elaborate stonework and gardens on the outside. He utilized his carpentry skills to create magnificent wood paneled walls on the inside and to expand the original building with an extensive addition in 1974.
Gerhardt’s son Gary and his wife Tina now manage the restaurant along with their son Gary Jr. who represents the third Langner generation. Today they continue Gerhardt’s commitment to quality food and service begun more than five decades ago.
