Welcome back to Travelers Rest, a Westchester landmark for over 100 years. Since 1961 the Langner family has been serving German specialty dishes and culinary creations of legendary proportions to our loyal clientele in a cozy, warm and elegant setting. Located in the hamlet of Kitchawan, considered to be part of Ossining, Millwood and Yorktown, the former inn was originally a stagecoach stop catering to weary travelers on Route 100, then a main thoroughfare. Today the fine dining establishment is ushering in the 3rd generation of Langners , Brooke and Gary Jr, to assist their parents, Tina and Gary in continuing the legacy of fine dining created by Gerhardt and AnneLise Langner . Travelers Rest today pays homage to the traditions and delicacies of the past while catering to the nuanced tastes of today’s most discriminating diners with a combination of traditional German entrees including sauerbraten, weiner schnitzel, and jaeger schnitzel, all offered with Travelers Rest’s signature potato pancakes or AnneLise’s coveted recipe for spatzele, and today’s contemporary farm to table offerings.
Travelers Rest welcomes customers in 4 elegant dining rooms: The Terrace Room—intimate fireside dining complete with a terrace overlooking the manicured, lighted and professionally landscaped gardens, The Crystal Room, fireside dining underneath the fine Austrian crystal chandelier overlooking another angle of the gardens, The Lantern Room with its cozy banquettes lit by lanterns around the fire and vintage bar, and the recently renovated Atlantic Room, the largest by far, fireside dining and events of up to 200 guests. Waterside al fresco dining is available in-season and events can be hosted on the grounds and indoors with spectacular year-around views.
Regular dining hours are 5-9, Wednesday and Thursday, 5-10 Friday and Saturday and 1-9 Sunday and reservations are encouraged. There are numerous events throughout the year as well as private parties and special holiday menus.
At Travelers Rest there is something for everyone; the time honored traditions and dishes along with classic, tasteful ambience. Please follow us on FB/Pinterest/Twitter and always on the web at www.thetravelersrest.com
From The Langner Family…
“It’s been nearly 2 years since we returned to the helm at Travelers Rest, our beloved family restaurant and we have much to be grateful for. We are grateful for the loyalty and support of our customers, our staff and our family. Having the opportunity for 3 generations of our family to serve our customers and community for over 50 years is something we never take for granted. We continue to honor the “formula” that has worked for our family but are aware on a daily basis that we must keep evolving, keep our restaurant and its offerings current and be open to change. We hope you recognize this effort in the consistency of the dining experience here, complimented by the new events we’ve been hosting, and solidified by the quality and attention to detail we aim for in every private party that you entrust to us. As we move into the digital age we promise never to compromise our family’s high standards for your satisfaction, enjoyment and dining experience. Please let us know how we are doing and if there is anything at all we can do to make your experience here at Travelers Rest more memorable. We are only as good as our last meal served and meeting and exceeding our customers’ highest standards is our primary goal. Thank you for visiting and for your continued business.”—Tina & Gary
Kitchen… from Executive Chef Walter Rivalsi…
Executive Chef Walter Rivalsi has been busy creating innovative and enticing entrees bringing his signature fusion repertoire and farm to table aesthetic to our menu. Maintaining our history is important to Chef Rivalsi and the Langner family so we will continue to serve our classic German selections and some of our customer favorites while incorporating a new tastings option and numerous exciting specials entrees and appetizers. Working closely with the Langner family and listening to customers feedback is helping to translate our diners’ tastes and interests into new dishes and events, keeping each visit to Travelers Rest interesting and yet familiar. Chef Rivalsi and his team oversee the entire kitchen operation ensuring that meals are cooked to perfection and delivered on time.
“Customers’ tastes and interest in food were much less sophisticated in the past than they are now. Now we work equally very hard maintaining the quality of the past but also interpreting the food trends and demands that today’s customers expect. We strive to offer menu items that appeal to everyone and some more foodie-oriented offerings so that our patrons from all generations find something they love here.”—Chef Rivalsi
From the Bar…
Gary Langner Jr is our head bartender and can be found at the main bar in the Lantern Room. He has built a solid reputation for his innovative martinis and his wine offerings. You can find him at the main bar every night and as each holiday approaches he is busy custom-mixing his signature holiday cocktails.
“In addition to designing our custom cocktails I have been busy working on our wine list. We are responding to our customers’ demands for a versatile and well-rounded wine list and have added a number of California whites and Italian reds, including a rich cabernet sauvignon from Sequoia Grove from the Napa Valley and a Trivento Malbec, which have received rave reviews.” Each month Gary will share wine news along with updates on our plans for new beverage options and our foray into craft beers. Always on tap is Spaten Oktoberfest, a Travelers Rest customer favorite~ Please stop by the bar to chat and with Gary and his team.
